Professor Candidates

History of Magic
  • Daria Marshall: I've been involved with HPA for a year now and I absolutely love the organization, both what we stand for and the people. I also love taking pictures and I always have my camera with me. I'm currently a second year biochem major who wants to eventually become a pediatrician. I embrace all things nerd ranging from Harry Potter (well dur) to Doctor Who to Game of Thrones and look forward to seeing what exciting things HPA has in store for this year.
  • Anne Pugh: My name is Anne Pugh and I am a senior Youth and Community Studies major from Houston, Texas. I joined HPA last year and I found it was something I really wanted to spend my time on since we do a generally awesome job of decreasing world suck! I would want to be the History of Magic professor because I am proficient with social media, I attend a majority of our events and outings and I would love to help document all the great things we do! Not only have I held numerous leadership positions on campus but I truly care about our mission and the people we help and I think that will make me a great officer for you all!
Defense Against the Dark Arts
  • Kylee Slough: My name is Kylee, I'm a senior International Relations and Global Studies major and I joined HPA last fall (I studied abroad last spring though). I'd like to run for Defense Against the Dark Arts professor because I love volunteering and feel that I could do a good job as the service coordinator since I've already held the same position in another club. Under me we had around twice as many people attend volunteer events as we had in previous years and I'd love to do the same thing with HPA!
  • Aranda Salazar: Hi! My name is Aranda Salazar, I am from a small town in central Texas called Brownwood! I am currently a sophomore Social Work major, and I really love it! My Harry Potter experience has really been awesome, I was a book nerd as a small child and read everything I could get my hands on. Whenever I started to read Harry Potter I immediately fell in love. I really enjoy Harry Potter because it has a great story and the characters are real to me. It showed me what real friendship was, and how a mother's love can keep you safe forever. (I am really close to my mother and I love how Lily protects Harry, I honestly tear up every time I think about it) I have read other popular series, but Harry Potter is by far my favorite. (I am even going to make my little sisters read it because I have loved it so much!) I feel that I would make a great professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts because I am very organized and I love to volunteer! I also feel that I could find great service projects for our club! I also would really like to become more involved with the Harry Potter Alliance because it has made such a difference in my young life, and I want to provide that for other children.
Divinations:
  • Bianca Avila: I'm Bianca Avila, a second-year Journalism major, with a Gryffindor heart and soul, and I would be ecstatic if I could be Austin Harry Potter Alliance's Divinations Professor.
When I worked at my local chamber of commerce, I was head of preparations for parades/festivals (Fourth of July, Christmas, Teacher Appreciation), annual races (Possum Pedal Ride, Run for the Children), and chamber member luncheons/dinners. I was also in charge of planning team dinners, game nights, staff meetings and parties for my high school debate team. Because of these past experiences, I believe I could organize various events and projects, such as the Yule Ball, for Austin HPA throughout the year. Grocery shopping and cooking are huge pastimes of mine (come visit my kitchen sometime!), and my dog is my everything. I enjoy annual family trips to visit relatives in Mexico and long drives around my hometown, with sweet tea in the cup holder and friends in the passenger's seat. Children are one of my weaknesses, hence my year spent teaching sunday school and working at a daycare.
Thank y'all so much for considering me for Austin HPA's Divinations Professor!
  • Samantha Facile:  Hi, I am Sam Fucile, a proud Gryffindor from Rhode Island. I am a freshman majoring in Studio Art, and you could say Harry Potter is my religion. I am running for Divinations Professor because I love event planning because I live for the details of an event and making everything look put together and spectacular. I was a leader of the fashion club a few years back and planned a huge Fashion Show that the club put on at the end of the year. I was in the show, and put it together behind the scenes. In the past few years, I was involved in NHS, NAHS, key club, two Relay for Life events, and helped set up a debate tournament at our school. Fun facts about me are:
I spent 12 hours in line for Deathly Hallows part two,
My twin brother and I commonly engage in quote battles
Yes, you can call me a Weasley because of my hair.
Arithmancy:
  • Abby O'Connor: I’m Abby O’Connor, and I’m a freshman International Relations and Global Studies major and Nerdfighter from Sugar Land, Texas (which is right outside of Houston). I’d love to be the Arithmancy Professor (or Treasurer) of Austin’s HPA because I’m extremely excited about getting involved with HPA, and I really would like to jump right in. I know I’m just a freshman, but I’m super responsible (I worked the front desk of a business all of last year by myself, handling their transactions) and dedicated to anything with which I’m involved. DFTBA!
  • Emily Carlson: My name is Emily Carlson, and as an intended accounting major, I'm running for the arithmancy professorship (treasurer).  I am a transfer student from Pennsylvania looking to become more involved at UT.  Previous leadership experience includes a secretary position for a community service organization through the YMCA, as well as president of National Honor Society and captain of my swim team in high school.   I believe I have the necessary experience to work on an executive board, the time to dedicate to HPA, and a never-ending love for all things Harry Potter!

9/11 Meeting Recap

  • Due to some confusion about who is eligible to run, officer elections have been pushed back a week. Anyone wanting to run has until Monday, September 17, to email a 3-4 sentence bio (who you are, why you want to run, your qualifications, etc.) to austinhpalliance@gmail.com. During the meeting on Tuesday the 18th, each person who has submitted an email will have 2-3 minutes to speak about why they are running and why the rest of the members should vote for them. After the meeting, the candidate's bios will be posted on Facebook and an online poll will open. Members will have until Monday the 24th to vote for each professorship, and the new officers will be announced at the meeting that Tuesday. ANYONE can run for office, including new members and freshmen. See last week's recap for a description of each post and please feel free to email us with any questions.
  • The Equality FTW fundraiser wrapped up last week with $94,953, nearly twice the HPA's goal! Thank you so much to everyone who donated. That money is going straight into making our campaigns and projects even more awesome.
  • The HPA has officially relaunched their voter registration drive, Wizard Rock the Vote, for the 2012 elections. If you are not registered to vote, need to renew your registration, or you're not sure if you've registered, this site is where you want to go: http://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/voter/reqvr.shtml. If you would like to help register people to vote in our upcoming registration drive, it would help if you are a certified Volunteer Deputy Registrar. The required one-hour class to become a VDR is held every weekday at 10:30 and on October 2 at 10:30, 12:30, and 6:30 at 5501 Airport Boulevard. I am going to the one tomorrow morning, so if you are interested and need a ride, let me know ASAP. More info on becoming a VDR here: http://www.traviscountytax.org/goVotersVDR.do.
  • If you want to get a head start on the election season and find out who's running for what, the Texas Secretary of State's office has all the info: http://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/candidates/general/2012gensbs.shtml and http://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/candidates/index.shtml. To find out which district you're in for any of the races, just enter your address here: http://www.fyi.legis.state.tx.us/. Make sure you're looking at the November 2012 districts, not your current district representatives; the district maps were redrawn this past year and many cities got their representatives shuffled around. Speaking of voting laws passed last year, please remember that the voter ID law did NOT go into effect. A federal court struck it down as unconstitutional just a few weeks ago. If a poll worker tries to tell you that you need photo ID in addition to your voter certificate, they are wrong. Unless something drastic happens in the next 8 weeks, all you need to vote is the certificate they give you upon registration. If you forget that, then your UT student ID should be sufficient. No driver's license or birth certificate required.
  • The HPA is also rebooting their Not In Harry's Name campaign, a project designed to get Warner Bros. to switch to fair trade chocolate in their products. Their current chocolate provider received a failing grade from Free2Work, an organization that rates companies on their efforts to address and prevent forced labor and child labor (literally the only criteria out of 48 that the company met was that there have been zero reports of retaliation against employees who attempted to organize, which may well be because there have been no such attempts). This campaign has been nearly two years in the making, and Warner Bros. has yet to say much on the matter, but the more people we get involved in this the more likely it is that they will have to pay attention to us. To read the ongoing correspondence between the HPA and WB, sign the petition, or read the full (and very depressing) Free2Work report on Behr's Chocolate, go here: http://thehpalliance.org/action/campaigns/nihn/.
  • As I'm sure you all know, J.K. Rowling's new book, The Casual Vacancy, is coming out in just over two weeks. For whatever reason, no Austin bookstore seems to think this is an occasion worthy of celebration, which means we're just going to have to throw our own party. :) Keep your calendars clear on Friday the 28th for a kickass HPA celebration, because even if Harry Potter is over the only proper way to celebrate a new J.K. Rowling novel is with butterbeer and chocolate wands! As soon as we have the room reservation cleared, we'll make a Facebook event with all the details.

9/4 Meeting Recap

Thanks so much to everyone who came out tonight! For those who couldn't make it, here's what you missed:
  • The HPA's current campaign, Equality FTW, is almost done with its fundraising stage. We hit our $50,000 goal with a week to spare, but there's still a few days left if you want to contribute and get some awesome rewards! Once the fundraiser is over, we'll start helping with the actual campaign, which will focus on three specific points: education equality, LGBT rights, and immigration reform. The one project that has been officially announced so far will begin in the spring with the start of Accio Books, the HPA's annual international book drive. This year the books will go toward building a library for a charter school in Chicago. If you want to find out more about Equality FTW or donate to this campaign, check out http://www.indiegogo.com/EqualityFTW.
  • The 2012 Yule Ball is on! Texas Quidditch and Keep Austin Wizard will be partnering up to throw another rocking charity ball this December. If you would like to help with planning, decorating, or catering, keep an eye out for updates!
  • We will be getting an informal group together to go to the Austin Teen Book Festival on Saturday, September 29. If you're interested in joining us, please send us an email letting us know you'd like to come and also whether you have a car or will need a ride. For more information about the authors and events at the festival, check out http://austinteenbookfestival.com/.
  • If there are any local groups or charities you know of that you think the HPA should get involved in, let us know! While the major HPA campaigns are obviously important, we want to make an impact locally too, and we'd love some input about good places to work with.
  • Each semester we hold a House Cup competition. Points are awarded as follows:
    • Meeting attendance: 1 point
    • Donations (during book/food drives): 2 points per item
    • Service Events:
      • 5 points for short (1-2 hour) events
      • 3 points per hour for longer events
    • Social Events: 2 points
    • Random Acts of Awesome - points will be awarded to members who go above and beyond with things like organizing events, helping make Quidditch concessions, decorating for the Yule Ball, etc. Anything we don't expect you to do but you do anyway because you're just that awesome. Think Neville standing up to his friends in Sorcerer's Stone. :)
  • Finally, we have four Professorships open this semester that we would love to fill!
    • Defense Against the Dark Arts (Service Chair): Arranges local charity events, donation drives, volunteering, etc. Must have keen awareness of local issues, be able to plan events, and have enough schedule flexibility to attend those events.
    • Divinations (Event Planner): Organizes long-term projects and campaigns (e.g. the Yule Ball). Event planning experience a plus. Must be able to commit hours during midterms and finals.
    • Arithmancy (Treasurer): Handles all revenue and budgetary issues. Maintains club bank account. Experience ideal but not required.
    • History of Magic (Historian): Records all events and social gatherings. Maintains Facebook photo album. Handles club publicity. Must be able to attend all HPA events.
  • Anyone interested in any of the Professorships, please email a short bio (3-4 sentences) to austinhpalliance@gmail.com explaining your qualifications and why you want the position. All candidates will have two minutes to speak at next week's meeting; the bios will be posted on Facebook for those who can't attend the meeting. Immediately after the meeting an online poll will open where members can vote for each Professor. Polls will close on Monday, September 17, and the winners will be announced at the meeting on Tuesday the 18th. If you have any questions about the election or any of the positions, please let us know!
  • Finally, there will be a slight room change for next week's meeting. An event is taking place in BUR 134, so we will be right next door in BUR 130. Same day, same time, just one door over. We'll send out a reminder next week and we'll post signs outside the day of so hopefully everyone will find us just fine.
Thanks again to everyone who made it out! If you have any questions or concerns about anything in this post, please feel free to email us or hit me up on Facebook. See you guys next week!
